Month of Thanks: Day 22

Day 22: Smiles

Alright. This one is both serious and silly, but think about it: Smiles are powerful. For someone who struggles with depression or a teenager who feels invisible, a smile could change their day, or even their life. Smiling is a non-verbal way to acknowledge someone, to greet them, to let them know that they matter. While that may seem simple to some, to others it’s the world. A smile is a tiny act that can have a big impact on someone’s day and you don’t even have to know the other person you’re smiling at.

In addition to brightening someone else’s day, it can brighten your own. After all, it takes active thought to smile. One must enact multiple muscles in the face in order to smile. The requirements necessary for this are enough to change your own mentality, to make you a little happier, and, as silly as it sounds, be the sunlight in your own day. So, I’m grateful for smiles and the enormous power they hold.
