Winter may not be official until December 22nd, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get into the winter spirit. I mean, the temperatures have dropped, the wind has picked up a bite, and frost blankets the early morning world even if snow hasn’t quite made its appearance yet. Aka it’s cold! Haha!
And with this cold weather it’s only a natural reaction us fur-lacking animals to hibernate within the warm walls of our houses, but most of us aren’t very good at actually hibernating all winter. That would be a LOT of sleep. :p So, what do we do while hiding in our cozy homes? Well, I don’t know about all of you, but one of my favorite winter activities is enjoying a steaming cup of hot cocoa while sitting in front of a warm, crackling fireplace.
The best part about this winter is that I get to sit by a real fireplace. You know, the kind that actually burns wood? :p Growing up, my parents had a gas fireplace. All you did was flip a switch and BAM! Fire. While it was gorgeous and easy to maintain, it didn’t give off much heat or fill the house with the tantalizing smell of burning wood. This year, I’m taking full advantage of that wood burning fireplace. I want my clothes, my hair, my book to smell like the fireplace, the smell that fills the cold world even when you’re driving around in your car.
Of course, the only thing that makes that smell and feeling better is hot cocoa. Whether you make it with water or milk, marshmallows or whip cream, this is one of those drinks that just screams ‘WINTER!’ You can even have it in a variety of flavors: mint, raspberry, caramel, amaretto, cinnamon, Irish creme, etc, etc. There’s a hot cocoa for everyone. Well, everyone who likes chocolate. If you don’t like chocolate, I can’t help you. Try eggnog?
Now for the ‘icing on the cake’: a gentle blizzard to watch out the window. Yes, blizzard. :p In the Midwest, hibernating just isn’t the same without a foot of snow plummeting from the sky and covering everything in a gorgeous blanket of white. What? You mean, most people don’t like that? Oh… Haha! Well, you can just call me a polar bear, then! Rawr!
