Days of Christmas

On the 20th day of Christmas…

advent20Once a Year

I love this time of year. I love the lights. I love the snow. I love the decorations. I love the food. I love the drinks. I love the dessert. I love the cheer. There is just something about this time of year that puts a certain mood in the air, a certain spring in people’s steps. It’s awesome, but most of all I love the anticipation of Christmas.

I look forward to Christmas day where my family and I get to sit in front of the brightly-lit tree. I look forward to relaxing in my pjs. I look forward to opening presents. I look forward to the feast. I look forward to knowing that I have nothing more to do during the day than sit around and enjoy the atmosphere. It’s in this anticipation that many people wish Christmas was more than once a year.

You know those people, the ones that start counting down to next Christmas the day after Christmas. Yeah, those people. Yet, what they don’t realize is that the splendor, the glamor, the wonder that is Christmas wouldn’t truly exist if Christmas were more than once a year. Think about it? When something happens often, it becomes less special. We don’t hold the same excitement while waiting for it because we know another one will come real soon, but that’s not the same for Christmas.

Christmas is once a year. That might make me sad because I love the Christmas season, but I’m also grateful for it because it’s this infrequency that makes Christmas so special. We hold it in such high regard. We think of it fondly. There are certain things we do, certain movies we watch, certain musics we listen to, certain foods we eat, only at this time of year and all of those once-a-year things are honestly what makes Christmas so special. For that reason, I’m okay with and happy that Christmas is only once a year. The year-long wait is what makes it all worth while in the end. ^.^
