Sunshine Blogger Award

What is the Sunshine Blogger Award?

The Sunshine Blogger Award is given to those who are creative, positive and inspiring, while spreading sunshine to the blogging community.

Thank you so much to my co-host Flavia for nominating me for Sunshine Blogger Award! 😃 (She uh… nominated me back in 2016 and I’m just now getting to this… Oops. 0.0)

Rules:

  • Thank the person(s) who nominated you in a blog post and link back to their blog
  • Answer the 11 questions sent by the person who nominated you
  • Nominate 11 new blogs to receive the award and write them 11 new questions
  • List the rules and display the Sunshine Blogger Award logo on your post and/or on your blog

Flavia’s questions:

Which 2016 release are you most looking forward to? (I know that there isn’t much left of 2016, but there are still books coming out!)

Bahahahaha! This is why I shouldn’t wait so long to do these posts. 😆But oh well! Let’s see! My most anticipated release of 2016 was… probably A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir. I had been super lucky and won a copy of An Ember in the Ashes and fell in love with it and really wanted to read the sequel. However, I have still not gotten around to even picking up a copy. Hahaha! I’m so bad at this. 😜

Which 2017 release are you most looking forward to?

Well, it already came out, but I think my most anticipated release of 2017 was definitely Roar by Cora Carmack. I was so excited about this book. It sounded like it was going to be awesome! It got quite a bit of hype and the promos were so much fun for it and I couldn’t believe when I was given a finished copy by the publisher. Best bookmail ever! 😄 P.s. It was definitely worth the hype! (And I don’t say that often.)

Do you like the bookish social media scene? Why?

Um… I mean… yes and no. I don’t like social media because a lot of it has no value or worth and it’s extremely difficult to keep up on (unless it’s your job, I imagine.) There are always things I’m missing. I don’t always have the time to be in the thick of those activities/events, but I know they are important. They are really resourceful if you have the time. So, I think it has advantages, but it can be difficult to remain active in.

If a book and its movie adaptation are both available for your reading or viewing pleasure, which do you go for first?

If I own the book, the book. I try to always read the book first just because it’s the original (and is almost ALWAYS better.) It can also offer insight into some of the items that may not be fully explained in the movie, and that way I’m not imagining the actors/actresses in place of the characters in the books. I offer my imagination more freedom by reading the book first.

Though, I have been known to watch the movie before the book and then been tempted to read the book. Such was the case for Hunger Games, If I Stay, and The 100. (2/3 were better in book form.)

Do you prefer physical, traditional books? Or e-books?

Physical. Fully. I do occasionally read ebooks as I often receive them for review from Netgalley and other such sites. However, I do not prefer them. I do not like how the page turns and my eyes have NOTHING to wander to when I get curious about what’s about to happen. I can’t tuck my finger into the next page in anticipation of turning the page and continuing the story as quickly as possible. Ebooks are just too constricting for me to fully enjoy them the way I enjoy physical books. (And I can’t put them on my bookshelf. 😝)

What kind of music do you listen to when you’re reading (or do you not listen to music)?

HA! Music while reading. Are you insane?! Absolutely not! Noise is a no-no. I can barely handle them birds outside because my brain is so finely attuned to sound, particularly music, that I cannot just zone it out. Music is at the forefront of my mind. It captures my attention and forces me to notice the change in the phrases and anticipate what’s coming next. Music is really a full-attention thing for me and deserves its own focus time. 😄

If you were offered a bundle of bookmarks, or a bookish candle, which would you choose?

One or the other? Hm… Let’s see. I don’t use bookmarks. I actually use a card from Magic: The Gathering. 😜 #GeekForLife Bahahaha! And I don’t really burn candles. (I prefer incense.) So… about that. :/ Still, I’d probably take the candle if given the option because I’m more likely to burn it than I am to use the bookmarks. Bookmarks… are just tools. Candles are designed for enjoyment, you dig? 😂

Are you in the mood for particular kinds of books during different seasons of the year? Such as classics during the Fall, or beach reads during Summer?

Um… No. Not really. 😝 I read whatever I want all year round no matter what is popular or being published. I’m just a hipster like that! hahahaha! Though, I have to say that I really hate looking at what’s pubbing during the summer because everyone’s about the ‘beach reads,’ and I don’t really do those kinds of stories. 😕 Probably the winter is a better time for pubs for me. They tend to be darker and more magical. 😄

Do you actively keep up with book trends? Or do you just go for what sounds good to you, no matter the year of release?

Ah! The hipster in me has come out again. 😛 I mean, I like to be up to date (being a book blogger and all), but it can be expensive and time-consuming and I’m still trying to catch up on the last decade during which time I wasn’t reading. As such, I’d say it’s a mix. I know what’s going on. I can chat about those new books and the trends, but I am still very much rooted in reading the oldies.

Do you read more than one book at once?

Had I actually posted this award on time, my answer would’ve be fully, whole-heartedly, and vehemently no. My brain doesn’t work like that. However! I have been training my brain over the last few months to accommodate multiple books at once by reading them in different formats. I.e. audiobook vs physical. The difference in reading voices (mine vs the narrator) allows me to compartmentalize the stories and ‘read’ them at the same time.

What are you reading now?

When I was writing up this post, I was actively reading Zodiac by Romina Russel as part of the read-a-long on Twitter in expectation for the 4th book’s release. However, who knows what I’m really reading right now. :p (I’m actually probably reading something for work because I’m scheduled to work today. HAhahaha!)

  1. Thank you so much for the nomination! I just saw this today!!! Oops! I will make it a point to get to this soon and I love your questions they’ll be fun to answer!

And I’m totally #TeamNoNoise while reading. My only rule when I was looking for a house with my hubby was that we would convert one of the bedrooms into a library so I could have my zone lol

  2. Thank you for the nomination sweet! Much appreciated!

I feel like I’m one of the minority that actually likes having music or some noise in the background… particularly soundtracks… epic fantasy soundtracks whilst I’m reading an epic fantasy kinda thing!! 😂

I like physical more too, I’d actually never read an ebook before netgalley! But I find sometimes I’m able to get though them a lot quicker than physical books… although I still prefer physical, as a bookstagrammer as well I definitely love having pretty physical books! 😀

I’m also like yourself in the fact that I don’t read anything particular in relation to the seasons… I don’t get that concept at all! 😂 I’m a read anything any time kinda girl! Depends on my mood rather than the season… definitely!

Anyway, lovely post! I’ll be looking forward to answering your questions indeed! 😉

    1. You are very welcome, Shannon! 😀 I look forward to reading your answers! 🙂

Hahaha! I think that’s cool, though. I imagine having the right music for the book makes it feel like a movie or something, it interacts with more parts of your brain and brings the story to life. Alas, if only music didn’t distract the bejeebus out of me. :p

Huh. That’s quite interesting. In my experience, those who prefer physical books actually take longer to complete ebooks. At least such is the case for Flavia and myself. :/ But yes! Taking pictures of ebooks is such a nightmare! I gave up on that one real quick. sigh

Hahahaha! Oh, that’s too funny, Shannon! I’m not a read-by-season person, but I’m also not a mood reader. :p (As my discussion this week talked about.) I choose my next read via length of the book. So, that doesn’t always work well with the seasons. 😉 )

  3. Thank you so much for the nomination! It’s such a fun way to get to know new people, and I can’t wait to answer your questions. There are some pretty tough ones among them!

  4. Love these answers! I cannot listen to anything when I read either! I am so tempted to bring earplugs when I go to Barnes and Noble so I could sit in the comfy chairs and read…but that’s a little much 😂

    1. Hahahahaha! I would be sooo distracted at B&N (or anywhere in public.) I would have to like use my book to block out all my peripheral vision and then I’d look like the crazy half-blind person who LITERALLY has their nose buried in their book. 😂

  5. Yay! Thank you a bunches for the nomination!! I totally agree with you, half the reason why I moved out of my parent house was so I can live in a noise free environment where I can read. Only if I’m at a coffeeshop or in the bus, will I listen to instrumental music as I read.
I used to only read physical books but now that I’ve been doing so many reviews for Netgalley, I’ve had to read a lot on my kindle, which has its own perks (I guess, lol).
I had lots of fun reading about your bookish habits in this post, have a good weekend! 😀

    1. You’re very welcome, Delphine! 😀

I totally know that feeling! Living alone is a reader’s dream come true. Hahahaha! I’m in the process of prepping to live alone again as we speak and I can’t wait! :p

Ah! Yes. ebooks have their perks when they are ARCs. Gotta love the prestige of that. 😉

Thank you for reading and I hope you had a lovely weekend, as well! 😀 Can’t wait to read your answers!

  6. Thank you for the nomination!

I’m guilty of reading multiple books at once. Sometimes up to 5-6. blush Usually I focus on one or two though. And usually one or two are fiction while the rest might be non fiction or anthologies.

I agree with you on tucking my finger under the page in anticipation of turning it. 🙂 I read a lot of ebooks because they’re easier to carry around when I’m not home, but I miss that you can’t “dig in” to the book physically.

    1. You’re very welcome, Sonia! 😀

Woah! That’s a lot of books, but I have heard of others doing so, where most are non-fiction. I think that must use a different part of the brain or something.

Oh yeah. Most of my ARCs are digital. So, when I read those I don’t get the experience, but I suppose it’s a trade off. :p Still, I could never go to ebook full time. That’s… just insane.

  7. Thanks so much for the tag! Hopefully I’ll get to it soon!
Music and Ebooks are a no no for me as well. I can have the TV on with the volume low but that’s about it. I would love a noise free reading environment but two kids and a husband never allow that! Lol

      1. Oh yes! It’s more than possible and almost a requirement. It was hard at first but now my kids can have entire conversations with me and I won’t hear a word of it. That might make me an awful mother but a bookworms gotta do what she’s gotta do! 😂

  8. Oh god, I might just be the only person who prefers e-books to physical books 🙈

I loved your questions Mel! I’m already mentally answering them hahah, thanks for the tag 💖

  9. Thank you for the tag 🙂
We seem to be the same when it comes to noises. I absolutely cannot handle noises while I am reading. It’s way too distracting. Same goes for reading multiple books at once. I can only read more than one book if one is a physical book and the other is an audio book. It seems to be the only way I can keep the stories separate.
