Hallo-WE-en

Happy Halloween + Succubus!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

After an entire month of slaving away with decorations, finding the right costume, and determining whether you’re going to host the party or someone else is, it’s finally the glorious holiday where you get to be whomever you want for a day/evening! I already got a chance to celebrate last weekend and I hope everyone gets a chance to celebrate before All Hallow’s Day tomorrow. Halloween, after all, only comes once a year. πŸ˜‰ We wouldn’t want to disappoint all the ghouls, ghosts, and spirits who have been eagerly waiting in anticipation for the one night where they can be released and have a blast! Join them!Β πŸ‘»πŸŽƒ Have some fun! (And stay warm for all the people who, like me, are getting snow today! πŸ˜€ )

I am so freakin’ excited about snow! ❄️

Before I go spend the rest of the day attempting to NOT buy oodles upon oodles of Halloween candy that’s going on sale,Β I need to thank the thirty amazing, talented, spooky, wonderful bloggers, authors, and artists who joined my Hallo-WE-en event this October! I can’t express my gratitude. There were so many awesome posts and fantastic creatures and I’m happy that each guest got a chance to shine and share their favorite with my readers. Hopefully a bunch of you found some new people to stalk. πŸ˜‰ If you missed any of the posts, go check out the master list and read about some scary or magical supernatural creatures!

Succubus

If you’ve been paying attention this month, there are tons of supernatural creatures to pick from and rave about and all of my original favorites were chosen (and my least favorites. πŸ˜‰ ) Which means that when it came to selecting my creature for this event, I was at a bit of a loss. Of course, that was until my best friend said: “I’m surprised you’re not picking a succubus.” Now, I’m not sure what that says about me that my best friend thinks my favorite supernatural creature is a seductress who steals souls and/or life essence through sleeping with people, but hey! It’s an epic choice! So, here we go! πŸ˜€

Traditional

Succubi are not restrained to a single culture or religion, but actually developed in Christianity, Judaism, Arabian myths, and even potentially some African folklore. Each of these depicts the succubus in different ways. However, one fact holds true across all of them:

Succubi are female demons or dark entities that sleep with men in their dreams and take away their energy, vitality, and life.

In other words, succubi were originally evil and still are in some cases. But at the time, they were seen as temptresses that lured men into sexual intercourse (in dreams or sometimes not), which would then severely hinder the man physically or kill them entirely. Of note, there doesn’t seem to be any reference to succubi luring in women or when incubi (male succubi) came about in folklore and legend,.

Of course, things have changed quite a bit since back in the day, including our depiction of what succubi are.

Modern-Day

By Veralee1314 on Deviantart

Succubi nowadays don’t usually take on demon form with bat wings, horns, snake tails, or claws. They are, rather, much akin to some vampire lore in that they are beautiful, irresistible, and use their looks to lure in people to sleep with them and take their life forces. (Alright. Maybe they didn’t change that much. Haha!) But they’re no longer viewed as ugly, hideous demonic beings that force men to sleep with them in their dreams. Rather, they are just supernatural creatures who use their assets to stay alive. Nothing wrong with a little survival instinct, am I right? πŸ˜€ (An example of a succubus in human form was seen in the TV showΒ Charmed.)

Another piece that has changed is the malevolent aspect of succubi. These drop-dead gorgeous creatures aren’t always seen as evil, killing men for their life force. Yes, they do still kill people. There are still evil succubi out there. But some of these creatures only take bits and pieces of what they need, leaving their ‘snacks’ alive with a wild memory to remember them by. πŸ˜‰

From LOST GIRL Wiki

But the more important point of evolution in succubi is in the sexuality aspect. While typical succubi only lured in men and stole their life essence, modern culture has opened up succubi to be sexual beings with multiple genders. Generally speaking if women were being lured in, it was by an incubus, but there are now depictions of succubi luring in women as well as men to steal life forces or just… pieces of life forces. Such is the case in the popular show,Β Lost Girl.

Popular Culture

Still, succubi (and especially incubi) are not considered popular choices for supernatural creatures in mainstream TV shows and fiction. While they share a lot of similarities with vampires, the key element keeping them from being utilized is the requirement of having sexual relationships to steal life forces and energy. Sex is still quite a taboo in American culture to speak of, much less have a character with them (reasons why most shows including benevolent succubi are not American.) Hopefully people will overcome their fear of talking about and displaying sex in media because succubi truly are fascinating creatures with lots of different lore that would allow for a variety of different characteristics.

  1. Thanks for hosting the Hallo-WE-en event! It’s nice to read different takes on different creatures, and I’m now slowly catching up on reading them. πŸ˜†
And a Happy Belated Halloween! πŸ‘»

I like the succubi (and the inccubi), especially the modern version where like vampires, they look more like stunningly beautiful humans and only steal a bit of life force to survive in the modern world. I like the idea that a creature is not inheritently evil, that there are evil ones but not all of them are. πŸ˜€

    1. Hee hee! It was quite an interesting series and I love how many people are knowledgeable in supernatural creatures. It’s so awesome! πŸ˜€

Hee hee! Happy Belated Halloween! πŸ™‚

Exactly! Evil isn’t born. It’s made. And often times something is only evil because it doesn’t fit your personal morals and beliefs. But it may seem not-evil to others. I love the ability to blur that line between good and evil. πŸ™‚

      1. Yes, me too! I learned quite a few new things from them. πŸ˜€

I agree; like I always wonder, are witches really evil to the point medieval people chose to burn them at the stake? A lot of fiction I’ve read have a theme where humanity reject things they don’t understand, treating, say, a genetically modified human as monsters. πŸ™
I like reading good vs evil stories, but I prefer those where the line is blurred too; like is the antagonist really evil, or misunderstood, or have valid reasons but going about it the wrong way? I suppose I like the emotionally psychological kind of stories. πŸ˜€

        1. It’s not in fiction. People treat other people like monsters, like animals, like filth. Because of their skin color, their clothing, their religion, their sexuality. People hate and fear things that are different from them, that challenge the status quo and it’s pathetic! We’re all humans. We’re the only species that fight itself for literally no reason at all.

I can’t stand good vs evil stories anymore because too many of them make it so black and white. The world isn’t black and white. So, neither should fiction be because that’s an archaic belief, in my opinion.

          1. Yeah, it happens everywhere, even where I live that’s supposed to be a multi-cultural country, and the government loves to use the race card… it’s sad. πŸ™

I also agree good and evil shouldn’t be so black and white; there’s always a grey area where there’s a choice between hurting this side of people or hurting that side, where not everyone wins. That’s more real than “they’re evil just because!” And many things that seem “evil” may be just something people reject for being “not normal”! 😫

It sucks and drags me down too much (one reason I don’t read the news so much now), so I try to focus more on the positive; while there are people who rejects others because of [something], there are people who are accepting of others regardless. πŸ˜€β€οΈ

            1. Totally! Now this makes me want to write a novel delving into the more difficult aspects of ‘evil’ and how ‘evil’ is only a matter of your perspective. In that person’s story, they’re the protagonist. πŸ˜€

Yeah… I try to stay away from the news because it’s all propoganda bullshit nowadays. No one is actually reporting news anymore. They’re just trying to boost ratings and it’s dumb. I judge people based on their actions more than their looks. You do something stupid or rude, then I don’t like you. But I’m not going to judge you outright because of the clothes you wear, the color of your skin, or the items you happen to be carrying. Too many people make assumptions based on looks and more often than not, they’re wrong.

              1. That sounds interesting! Do let me know if you do write it, I wanna read it. πŸ˜€

Yeah, I suddenly realised their rating boosting tricks one day when they kept showing news of a particular aeroplane crash all day for an entire week. πŸ™
I agree, actions speaks louder than words, or in this case, looks! I try to do that too and hopefully am successful at it. Many opportunities to do that here, as I live in a multi-cultural country. πŸ˜€

                1. Hahahaha! Yes, that and the 2 dozen other story ideas I want to write. :p Too many ideas. Not enough time. sigh

That’s exciting! I try my best, as well, but we’re not nearly as diverse as I would like. πŸ™‚ Granted, university town changes things.

                  1. Haha, ideas galore! That’s good but maybe not so much on our time limit. I still have my Word document full of ideas I wrote since 10 years ago and I haven’t written a single one because I’m always distracted by other ideas. πŸ˜†

No worries, at least we try! πŸ˜€

                    1. BAHAHAhaHA! That was totally me. I haven’t touched my old desktop in forever, but I had a Word doc with story ideas too. Now the ideas are kind of all over the place because I get them at the most inopportune times. Hee hee! Oh, such is the life of a writer. :p

                    2. Haha, yeah, the same happens with my blog topics too! Now I sometimes pause a conversation (β€œWait! That’s a good idea, let me write this down…”) to write the draft post title so that I remember it later. πŸ˜†

                    3. Haha, nice! I should do this too, since I can’t remember what I wrote for what date when they’re in draft mode! I’d schedule them, but I might forget to finish it before the date. πŸ˜›

                    4. HAHA! Been there. Definitely been called out on it by some of my readers too (who apparently read my stuff right when it’s posted! DANG!) But I’ve been so busy that I just forget I’m a blogger some days. :p Hoping to not forget in the future.

                    5. Haha, some readers are pretty darn fast! Now I just set a reminder on my phone to check my posts the day before they’re scheduled to go out. πŸ˜†

You probably need a post-it on your mirror that says “I’M A BLOGGER!” πŸ˜›

                    6. Bahahahaha! I’d totally miss the sticky note because I’m too busy staring at myself. πŸ˜‰ But I do have notifications for my discussions. They go off the day before and then… I snooze them every half hour for the ENTIRE DAY! It’s really bad. :/ They just always go off when I’m doing things and then I just get in the habit of snoozing by the time I get home and might have time. :/ (Or I get home and don’t have time. Hahaha!)

                    7. I’d do that too! I tend to develop tunnel vision for stuff I’m used to seeing there like post-its, which is why I stopped using it. πŸ˜†

Oh, haha, I tend to snooze reminders too (especially in the morning!) and end up posting stuff later than I meant to. So now I set reminders even earlier, but then I get used that too… what a procrastinator’s problem. πŸ˜…

                    8. Hahahaha! I’m always like: “I need to post my post at X time.” and if I don’t get it up I’m like: “EVERYONE’S GOING TO HATE ME!!!!!” IT’s really bad, but I have been getting better at it lately just because of my lack of time due to grad school. I’m worried, though, that I’ll reach a point of like… “ef it” and stop posting. :/

                    9. I’m that way sometimes too, so I feel you. Even when I have the time to write, sometimes I’m just not in the right frame of mind to write and just don’t wanna do anything! I consider those my cheat days and share a video instead of writing something long, and hope I’d recover by the time next week comes along. πŸ˜…

I know you’re super busy and it’s difficult to keep up the quality posts (they have way more quality than mine, for sure! πŸ˜†), so I hope you’ll go easy on yourself every now and then. πŸ˜€

                    10. Hahahaha! I have been doing that. I just skipped all my posts for finals week because I was just like: “PANIC PANIC PANIC PANIC!!!!!” And then I spent half the week staring at my computer not studying. >.> I’m really bad at this school thing…

  2. My theory…. I have read that most men show signs of sexual arousal most nights when they sleep (I leave it to your imagination, since I don’t want to write an x-rated comment). Most of the time they (we) are completely unaware that it is happening. Sometimes, particularly with young men, it goes farther in what can be a very embarrassing way… I’ve always felt that succubi came about as an explanation for this natural occurring phenomena. “No dear, I don’t have hots for the woman next door. It was a succubus. I swear!”

I’m not sure if something similar happens with women, but if it does, it isn’t as obvious to a disinterested observer. Hmm, “disinterested observer” – that sounded creepy. Anyway, the husbands back in the day wouldn’t have noticed, and so there would be no, “Now who were you dreaming about last night? Don’t lie, I saw what was happening.” so no need for the women to invent incubi.

Actually, when I said “the husbands back in the day wouldn’t have noticed,” unfortunately, back in the day the husbands might not have noticed or cared about a lot of what was happening with the women around them, which might be why the women ended up inventing incubi – a creature willing to give them pleasure. The sucking the life forces out? Well, the husbands already did that, so they might as well have that hunky fantasy creature to woo them at night πŸ˜‰

  3. Several thoughts: first thanks for having us on your blog! It’s been a real pleasure.
Second: at last your post!!! I guess you must have read the Georgina Kincaid series by Richelle Mead πŸ˜‰
And last: where do you live to already get snow?

    1. Bahahaha! So many thoughts. :p

I’m so happy you were able to participate in my event and I’m happy you liked my post. I have not actually read anything by Richelle Mead, but I know she’s a popular paranormal author. (Probably why I haven’t read it since I don’t read much paranormal.)

Haha! I live in Michigan. :p Very North. πŸ˜‰
