December Update

IRL (In. Real. Life.)

Wow. December was insane. Finals. Holidays. 5+ inches of snow. Temperatures dropping 40 degrees in two days and then dropping some more, threatening to keep my car from turning on. This December has been one heck of a month. But I am alive. I’m not frozen. Neither is my puppy dog, though her sensitive paws are not enjoying the below zero temperatures. It’s okay. We’ve gotten it figured out.

But even more than that, I have finished my (second) first semester of graduate school and I’m really enjoying my current laboratory rotation. My professor is super candid and has offered me criticism that I have listened to it. (Honestly.) Because I already know that I want this to be the lab I spend my graduate career in. Now… I just have to be amazing and convince her to mentor me for the next 4-5 years. 😉 Fingers crossed that I make a good impression!

OH MY GOD! I wrote things! :p I know, I’m so silly. But after taking 4 months off touching any of my novels, I finally found some time. In fact, working on the first draft of my novel, SYMBIOTE, is what I did during the 4-days Christmas weekend and it was great! I spent a few too many hours chatting with my writer friends (aka the people who tell me I’m being stubborn and my plots aren’t going to work the way I want them to. 😉 Thank you to these two lovely women!), and I plotted out the second half of my novel. Thus… I am hoping to have a first draft finished in the next two weeks. (or the end of January at the very least.) It’s super exciting and I’ve been teasing the BEJEEBUS out of my betareaders. Hee hee! They love it, too. (I think.)

Sidenote: I’m going to start updating my blog to reflect the progress I make on my novels.
I have a page at the moment where I am updating, but I may make a side-bar status update as well.
So, stay tuned!

In addition to my novel, I wrote another short horror story and submitted it to an anthology. This one is all about Frankenstein. Funny thing, I didn’t actually know the original tale so I had to SparkNotes it before I started writing. Good thing I did. The movies aren’t quite right. :p But fingers crossed for that one and still waiting to hear back on the one I submitted in October. Maybe I’ll have some exciting publications next year????? *she says in an overly hopeful voice*

OH! And in case you missed it, I posted one of my completed novels, SUBMERGED, up on SwoonReads (an imprint of Macmillan.) If lots of lovely, awesome readers take the time to read, comment, and rate my novel, I could be offered a $10,000 publishing contract!!! That’s insane! What’s more, it could be what I need to finally getting an agent. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The next round for them picking books is January 5th. If you have time in the next week to read and rate, I would GREATLY appreciate it. But if not, you can read it when you want as SUBMERGED will be up on SwoonReads until May (when they do another round of book picks.) 🙂

Well, despite the insanity that was December with finals, holidays, and everything else, I did manage to kind of stick to a reading schedule. It took me quite some time to read all these books and I definitely had to skip a week or two over the last few months, but I made it! I read all the books I planned to read this month. (Okay, I lied. Finishing up Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde today. :p ) But I will be done very soon! Hee hee! Below are the books I read this December!

Wow. What an epic fail. Like, honestly, I did so bad this month. I had to skip so many blog posts because of school and chaos and school. :p I only managed to get 13 posts up (which is way low considering I usually post closer to 20 posts a month I think is my new average???) But I did get some posts up and I finally caught up on blog comments and I reached out to some newer bloggers who hit me up on Twitter. Very excited to see that there are still so many people joining the blog-o-sphere! Books really do bring people together. :p (So cheesy, I know!)

In other news, I didn’t reach my goal of gaining 1,000 followers by the end of 2018, but I knew it would be a long shot. Even so, I did surpass 900 followers! Which is amazing! I am so grateful for all the new readers and those who are sharing my posts on social media. It’s wonderful to hear from people and chat with them, which is why I blog in the first place! So, thank you to everyone.

Let’s make 2018 an even better blogging year!

  1. Congratulations.
Also, if you’re interested in Frankenstein, Extra Credit/Extra History (YouTube Channel), did some very interesting videos discussing the literary landscape in Mary Shelley’s time, as well as the character relationships and underlying philosophies they engaged. Really interesting stuff.
