2018 Plans & Goals

Wow. 2017 was a whirlwind of a year for both my blog and my real life. Let me do a quick run-down before I get into what I have planned for 2018! Ready??? Cue montage!

In 2017, I…

…reached and surpassed 900 followers! Not quite the 1,000 I was hoping for, but hey! I ain’t complainin’. I am overjoyed and ecstatic that this many people follow (and maybe read :p ) my blog and it’s because of all these amazing people that I continue doing this!

…hosted an absolutely EPIC Halloween event in October where 30 bloggers (+ myself) shared their favorite supernatural creatures with you all, my lovely readers! I had so much fun hosting and chatting about those awesome, creepy, beautiful creatures. It was definitely one of my more favorite events that I’ve hosted! πŸ˜€ You can check out the posts with this handy-dandy list!

…I started a fun, monthly blogging event called Calendar Girls! My fellow bloggers, co-host (Flavia), and I posted our top picks for each month’s theme for 12 straight months! It was exciting and we got tons of support from book bloggers everywhere! You can check out those posts (and lists of all the books picked) on this snazzy page!

…I read 58 books! That… is insane! Especially considering that in 2016, I only read 46. So I read an additional 12 books last year (okay. They might have been audiobooks. But meh! Hee hee!) To see what books I read in 2017, check out this list! (Ya think I like lists or something? πŸ˜‰ )

2017 Reading Challenge

Melanie has read 58 books toward her goal of 52 books.

published my very first short story in an anthology,Β Mirrors and Thorns,Β published by OWS Ink! I am still so grateful for all the friends, family, and bloggers who helped support my first piece! I am hoping I will have more to share with you in 2018! πŸ˜‰

…am officially a Goodreads author because I am officially published! So exciting! I went ahead and updated my new page already (because I’m such a total geek!) so feel free to check that out!

…uploaded my YA scifi novel, Submerged, onto SwoonReads for you all to read and rate in the hopes that I might be selected for a publishing deal! Will this mean I become a full time author? No. Not yet. :p But it will get my foot in the door and get me one step closer to my dream job! So, please help and let me know if I can return the favor in any way!

…started graduate school… again. :p Yup. I know. I ended up switching graduate schools and am giving it another shot. I’m enjoying myself a lot more than I did at the last university and I have hope that I will last long enough to earn my PhD! πŸ˜€ Wish me luck!

…started a Youtube channel and posted videos each week for about 5-6 months. Unfortunately, because of the above graduate school situation, I was forced to stop making videos. 😦 I am very sad about this and I wish I had to make more. Maybe sometime in the future (once I figure out an actual life schedule. Hee hee!)

…got into Instagram or rather Bookstagram! That’s right. I spent a lot of time last spring taking, choosing, and editing photos to throw up on Instagram to be part of the craze. Unfortunately, because I’m an AWFUL photographer, this was a very time-consuming hobby. So, I’m not doing it anymore, but I have some cool photos still up if you want to check them. (Another hobby I might like to get back into.)

Well… I think that’s it for what happened in 2017 (or at least as far as I can remember. :p ) So, let’s see what I have in store for 2018, shall we?

Alright. This is going to be a bit of a letdown and I’m sorry, but I wanted to warn you all right off the bat. I have done some contemplating of my life and what not (you know, introspection) and realized that I am going to have to prioritize a lot more than I currently do. 😦 I’m really sad about this because of what it means, but it’s a sacrifice I will have to make to advance my real life.

What do I mean by this?

  1. Calendar Girls is on hiatus.Β

Due to mine (and Flavia’s) extremely busy schedules for 2018, we have decided to post-pone any future Calendar Girls themes/posts/etc. We are disappointed about this, but feel it is a better choice than being sloppy, inattentive hosts. We hope you will bear with us as we try to find some balance in our lives and time again to return to it. πŸ™‚

  2. Non-Blogging Things (ie Youtube & Instagram)

For the time being, all Youtube videos and Instagram pictures will continue to remain old and not-updated. Both of these hobbies take a minimum of 2 hours each at least once a week. While this may not seem like a lot, that’s 2 hours I’m not writing blog posts, editing my novels, reading papers for lab, or studying for class. It’s a lot and 2 extra (or 4 if you think of both of them) can be very beneficial to me to get other things done.

  3. Weekly Blog Posts

I already don’t post much. My weekly blog posts have dropped dramatically over the last few months, particularly in December. I am sorry for this. However, this will continue for the foreseeable future. I will continue to post Sunday Book Reviews and Thursday Discussions, but I will be foregoing the Tuesday Highlights and other posts because I can use that time to respond to comments (which I have gotten really bad at over the last few months.)

Those are the major changes you will see for 2018 and, in case you are concerned about me giving up on blogging and just wasting time doing other things, I offer the following as an explanation.

As a PhD student in science, my job is to research. This includes reading papers, thinking up new questions that haven’t been answered yet, formulating and executing experiments to answer said questions, and then repeating whether I succeed or fail. This alone is more than a 9-5 job. Then you add in 2-3 classes of advanced level science which can take 1-3 hours to study for each day, I am extremely busy.

I can spend anywhere from 8 hours (on a lazy day) to 16 hours (on a busy day) just devoted to school. Then I have to add in my physical and mental health, plus that of my dog and I have hardly any time left to do anything. I will be cutting out all movies and Netflix in 2018. My hobbies will be limited to reading books and writing books because those are two of the most important things to me besides school and I still hope to become published someday.

I know this is less than ideal. I know many of you will feel like I’m abandoning blogging or perhaps neglecting you by not responding right away, but please do not take it personally. I am simply swamped, stressed, and trying to make sense of my life. That being said, I still look forward to communicating with all of you through blog comments or Twitter (which is easier to check some days). So feel free to reach out and…

Have a wonderful 2018! πŸ˜€

  1. 2017 was a busy but pretty cool year it seems and I hope 2018 will be as exciting (it already seems just as busy if not more so!). I wish you didn’t have to drop some of your blogging/extra things bc you’re one of my favorite bloggers but I 100% get it so no worries, just go kick some ass for that PhD!

    1. Awww! Thank you, Angela. πŸ˜€ ❀ That means a lot to me and trust me, I wish I didn’t have to drop them either. But until I have a better handle on my schedule and my time, I think it’s for the best. πŸ™‚ I need to stop being so stressed and this is one way that will help. πŸ™‚

Hope you have a wonderful 2018!

    1. Haha! That’s okay. πŸ™‚ I don’t think I made a huge announcement or anything. :p

And I switched because I couldn’t find a professor who wanted to work with me at my last university and my degree requires I have a mentor.

      1. I always thought when they accepted you, they knew you’d need a mentor so there would be someone willing to work with you… but I’m glad you’re at a new university with someone to work with! I applied to do a PhD back in the day. Long story short, I didn’t get in. I’m pretty sure no one could handle my views on Russian history because they go against the grain so much. πŸ˜€

        1. They do, and I rotated with 3 profs. But it turns out I wasn’t quite what they were looking for in a grad student and none of them wanted to mentor me.

Hahaha! Being a radical thinker and unafraid to challenge others can make life a tad difficult. :p But who really needs a PhD? It’s just a fancy piece of paper at the end of the day. You can learn all of it on your own if you really want to/have the determination. πŸ™‚
