In case y’all haven’t been keeping up on my monthly updates, the novel I am hoping to finish and query soon is ‘Sota Radiation‘. It’s a young adult science fiction.

I utilized my degree in genetics to create and build the world in which this novel inhabits. So, without further ado. Here’s what my query looks like for a taste of what the book’s about.

Electricity is the last element Giselle wants to control, but her genetics say otherwise. When the electricity manifests on her fifteenth birthday she, like all electricity adaptations, is sentenced to death. Even so, she finds herself alive. Not only that, but someone steals her away to Minneapolis, Minnesota, a city believed eradicated by the war. Here, the Wardens throw her into a crueler life than the one she left. Now, the very reason she was taken is the only thing keeping her alive.

Survival in Sota is contingent upon being useful. For Giselle that rests solely on her ability to wield her electricity. So long as she provides energy to power the Wardens’ underground maze, they’ll treat her no worse than just another genetically-mutated prisoner. Yet, she struggles. Knowing nothing about her adaptation or how to use it, Giselle fears it’s only a matter of time before she, too, is chosen for experimentation. Meanwhile, she’s forced to watch ‘useless’ adaptations suffer through the agony of being test subjects.

Unable to stop the mutilation of her friends, Giselle lashes out at those around her. Anger threatens to consume her. That is, until she’s offered a way out by teens who possess adaptations unlike any she’s ever seen. This could be the answer to her prayers or a one way ticket to death. Or both.

7/7/7 Snippet

“You know mine,” she returns, only half-joking.

I bite my tongue. I shouldn’t have said that. I shouldn’t have said anything. I’m not spoiled, but compared to Kalina I am and it makes me wish there was some way to help her. She’s a sweet girl and pretty, too. She deserves better than the family she was born into, but she wasn’t as lucky as her sister, who was an air adaptation and got to leave. We don’t hear from her, but it’s said things are better in the air quarter. It’s the richest of the six quarters.

    1. Haha! Thank you. :p That was what I got after taking the critique notes from Kate. I quite like how it turned out. ^.^

I’m actually quite surprised just how far along the 7/7/7 did fall in my first chapter, but it makes me feel better about it. (Doesn’t as feel as slow this way. :p) And thank you! Give me a post-apoc world and I’m game! Hee hee!

  1. Oo, this is an intriguing snippet. One of the girls is an “air adaptation”
    — that’s so cool.

Thanks for tagging me on the 7/7/7 tag. It’s a fun one, but am bashful about sharing passages from my WIP so, rather than writing a 7/7/7 post, I hope it’s alright if I share my lines here:

    “Three weeks,” Mikey answered.
“Did I say that out loud?” Eyes still glued to the PS4 game, Mikey
    nods.
    Am I losing it?
Did I say that out loud, too?
    What about that?
Mikey nods and chuckles. I’m not sure if he’s laughing at me or at his game.

And I totally understand about being hesitant to share. I was, too. Thank you for sharing with me, though. ^.^
